Welcome back!

Student to teacher - meet Mr Massimo McKie

From 2018 Lincoln House Captain and production devotee to 2026 Science and Mathematics Teacher at our Murray St Campus - Mr McKie reveals his inspiration.

Which staff member had the biggest impact on you when you were a student here?

“I'd say Mr Lim. His approach to teaching has influenced my own and I could never forget having him for four separate subjects in Year 7. He taught them all well very well."

What inspired you to pursue teaching?

“I remember the impact good teachers had on me; I wanted to continue the cycle. Teachers that made me feel safe to make mistakes and showed me the wonder hidden in the world around me impacted me in ways I still think about today. I believe curiosity is the spark that humanity needs to keep moving forward so, I want to keep things moving forward.”

How does it feel to swap the student desk for the teacher's desk at your old school?

“It's strange but in a good way! It's enlightening to see the other side of how it all works and how such a great community is grown. It's a privilege to come back and add my own contribution.”

How has St George’s changed — and what still feels the same?

“It's bigger, in people and space. It makes it feel more like a "regular" school in that respect. With this change though, the sense of community remains unaltered. There's still a warmth amongst teachers and students that helps us all get through challenges and keep improving in a safe environment.”

Do you have a favourite memory from your time at St George’s?

“Being a part of the productions are definitely my favourite memories. Working as a team to put together a show teaches you so much in a short amount of time. The skills I learnt in performing arts have stuck by me in all areas of my life.”

What is the best part of your day?

“The moment a student finally has a "click" moment and understands something they were adamant they wouldn't be able to. Bonus points if they then make a connection to their world; "oh so that's why...", it's great to see a student discover the wonder of the world and see it trigger a want to learn more.”
