Students shine in Languages Week

Origami, rock-scissors-paper and jianzi (Chinese hacky-sack!) were part of the fun during Languages Week (Week 3). During PAWS, the Year 7 and 8 students were also challenged to solve linguistic problems – using sentences from another language alongside their English translations to then work out the meanings of other sentences. This requires students to use logic and think beyond their “English” brain as they quickly discover that other languages do not form sentences in the same way as English. Congratulations to Year 8 students Nathan, Hugo, Leon, Grayson and Wilbur, and to Year 7 students Sophie and Teannah, for getting the most correct in the time available!

Languages Week also coincided with the Education Perfect World Languages Championship where students were given eight days to learn as many words as possible in any language using the EP platform. I was so impressed with the effort put in by students, especially the following students who have received certificates and prizes:

Gold Award (Top 2% of competitors from around the world)

Indigo Caudo, Year 11

Alannah McVicar, Year 8

Bronze Award (top 10%)

Amelia Dansie, Year 8

Harper Pope, Year 8

Credit Award (top 20%)

Alexander Martin, Year 7

Jacob White, Year 10

St George’s Anglican Grammar School will be hosting a small group of visiting Japanese students from The Japanese School Singapore and we are seeking host families to support this exciting exchange program.

WHEN: Monday 3 to Wednesday 12 August (9 nights)

Hosting an exchange student is a wonderful opportunity for families to experience another culture, increase global awareness, practise language skills, and form lasting international friendships. These exchanges help develop cross‑cultural communication skills for both students and families involved.

What’s involved in being a host?

  • Provide a bed and meals, and include the visitor in your home life
  • Pick the student up from the school on arrival and take back to the school for departure.
  • The visiting students will attend SGAGS every school day during their stay.
  • Families will receive a payment to cover expenses
  • 24/7 bilingual support is provided to students and host families by DOA, the organisation facilitating the visit
