Year 10 Placements

A wonderful Work Experience Week

Throughout Semester One, our Year 10 students have been preparing to spend a week in a workplace of their choice - an invaluable opportunity to explore the world of work and gain insight into industries that interest them.

This week more than 100 students undertook placements across Perth, some venturing further afield including one student working on a farm in the Midwest of WA and another at a school in Dwellingup. It’s an exciting time for all involved.

The journey begins at the start of the year, with students developing a professional resume to introduce themselves to potential employers. Alongside this, they learn how to approach businesses appropriately, whether via email or in person. While not every student secures their first-choice placement, these challenges provide important opportunities to build resilience. Students are encouraged to persevere, refining their approach and continuing their search until they achieve success.

Although students are supported with a list of potential host organisations, they are also encouraged to utilise their own networks and initiative to secure placements that align with their interests. This process helps them develop independence, confidence, and valuable life skills.

As in previous years, our students are gaining experience across a wide range of industries, including mining, science, trades, retail, education, not-for-profits, and law. We are especially grateful to members of the St George’s community who have offered placements within their own workplaces—many hosting multiple students. This generosity speaks volumes about the strength of our community and the support shown to our young people.

We are also pleased to be developing ongoing partnerships with several organisations who are eager to host our students year after year. This ongoing support reflects the positive impression our students leave, as well as their willingness to learn, contribute, and embrace new experiences.

I have received positive feedback from employers already with comments such as

“We’re really happy with him. We want to hire him right now!”

and

“He’s engaged and working really hard.” And “It’s like she’s been working here for ages and it’s only the second day.”

Many thanks to the Year 10 Pathways teachers, Ms Georgia Bakeberg, Mr Bradley Cotterell and Ms Taryn Sephton who have assisted in preparing the students throughout the semester. Also thank you to all of the St George’s teaching staff for taking time out of their hectic schedules to check in with our students throughout the week. Very appreciative.

Work Experience Week was more than just a placement. It was a meaningful step in helping our students better understand themselves and their future pathways. We look forward to hearing their stories, reflections and the valuable insights they bring back, knowing these experiences will play a significant role in shaping their ambitions and aspirations and lead into Subject Selection next term.
