An incredible insight into law by Judge Linda Black
Our ATAR Politics and Law students recently experienced the legal system in an unforgettable way, thanks to a visit from District Court Judge Linda Black and her team. Rather than learning solely from textbooks, students were given a rare, hands-on insight into the workings of the judiciary.
Judge Black shared her knowledge of the court system, explaining key processes and the responsibilities of those within it. What made the visit truly engaging, however, was the interactive element. Students had the unique opportunity to try on Judge Black’s robes and even her former barrister’s wig (made from horsehair and costing $1,800!), bringing the profession to life in a tangible way.
The highlight of the session was a mock courtroom experience in which students took on various roles. With Judge Black presiding, the class stepped into the world of legal proceedings. In a surprising twist, I even found myself in the dock, accused of wrongfully issuing a student detention; an experience that brought plenty of laughter while reinforcing how court processes work.
This visit demonstrated the value of experiential learning. While classroom study provides essential theoretical knowledge, experiences like this deepen understanding by showing how concepts apply in real life. They also give students a clearer sense of what careers in law might involve.
As students look ahead to future pathways, opportunities like this are invaluable. I encourage everyone to make the most of experiences during the Term break, whether through work experience, volunteering, or career exploration. These moments can broaden your perspective and help you make informed decisions about the many exciting career paths available.
