Welcome aboard: Cape York immersion now open to Year 8 and Year 11 students

Earlier this term we introduced a wonderful new opportunity launching at St George’s Anglican Grammar School in 2027 - our inaugural Cape York First Nations Service-Learning Immersion in partnership with Red Earth.

This trip was initially restricted to our current Year 9 and Year 10 students, however having been approached by many students outside of these year groups and the confirmation of the tour including four of our St George’s Staff, we are delighted to announce that we are now in a position to extend this opportunity to our current Year 8s and 11s.

The immersion is designed to provide a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with First Nations communities, culture and Country through authentic relationship-building, cultural learning and service. The program will include opportunities to stay on Country with Traditional Owners, learn directly from Elders and community members, contribute to community-led projects, take part in cultural activities, and explore significant natural environments such as Cape York, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

A key focus of the immersion is not simply travel, but connection. Students will be encouraged to approach the experience with curiosity, respect and openness as they learn more about First Nations culture, community, sustainability and reconciliation in action.

Expressions of Interest are now open for students in Year 8 and 11 who are wishing to be considered for the immersion. As places are limited, students are required to complete an application form and submit the required deposit by 14 August. The application process will help ensure students understand the commitment involved and are well suited to the expectations of the experience.

This is an incredibly exciting step forward in our Service-Learning program at St George’s. Opportunities such as this allow students to grow in empathy, independence, resilience, leadership and cultural understanding, while also developing a deeper awareness of their role within the wider Australian community.

We look forward to seeing the interest in this program grow and are excited about the meaningful learning and personal growth this immersion may provide for our students in 2027.

Might as well jump! Who's taking Central Park Plunge?

A huge thanks to everyone who jumped on board Jeans for the Jump - a fundraising initiative supporting the students and staff who will take part in the Central Park Plunge later this year.

Students and staff swapped part of their formal uniform for their favourite denim, adding a gold coin to the donation box. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community embracing the day, with jeans of every style appearing across the school.

Jeans for the Jump raised $412.35 for Anglicare WA. This contribution will be added to the funds already raised through Silly Socks for the Summit, as our Plunge team continues working towards its overall fundraising target of $8,800.

The Central Park Plunge is a unique fundraising challenge that will see eight members of our school community abseil down Central Park in the Perth CBD. Taking on the Plunge requires courage, determination and a willingness to step well outside one’s comfort zone, all in support of people and families experiencing hardship across Western Australia.

Representing St George’s Anglican Grammar School in the 2026 Central Park Plunge are:

Year 12 Student participants:

  • Jade Fletcher
  • Sophie Gardner
  • Zara Jones
  • Mia McGurk
  • Zara Moesker

Staff participants:

  • Miss Giorgia Bakeburg
  • Ms Danielle de Witt
  • Ms Sadie Yoxall

Each member of the team is working towards an individual fundraising target of $1100. The funds raised will go directly to Anglicare WA, supporting the vital services and programs it provides to individuals, children and families throughout Western Australia. These services assist people experiencing challenges such as homelessness, financial hardship, family and relationship difficulties, and other periods of vulnerability.

Jeans for the Jump was another fantastic example of the generosity and school spirit within the St George’s community. Following the incredible support shown for Free Dress for Samoa the week before, it was especially encouraging to see students, staff and families continue that momentum and get behind another important cause.

A sincere thank you to everyone who wore denim, made a donation, promoted the event or supported our Plunge participants. Every contribution helps our team move closer to its goal and, most importantly, assists Anglicare WA in continuing its important work within our wider community. An online donation page for the Central Park Plunge has been opened for anyone who would like to further support the St George’s Central Park Plunge team:

We look forward to continuing to support our eight brave participants as they prepare to take the plunge in Term 4.
