Year 3 Community News

Dear Families, 

Welcome to Term 3!

We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break. We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 3 students continue to demonstrate our school values each day. Students have worked hard throughout the first half of the year, and we are excited to build on this success as we begin another engaging term of learning.

Curriculum News

English

This term in Literacy, students will begin our second CORE novel study, Storm Boy. Through this classic Australian text, students will explore themes of friendship, belonging, responsibility and the relationship between people and the natural environment. They will engage in rich discussions, analyse characters and events, and make connections between the novel and their own experiences. 

Students will apply their understanding through a range of reading, writing and speaking activities. They will continue to strengthen their sentence construction, paragraph organisation and vocabulary while responding to the novel through informative, persuasive and imaginative writing tasks.

In preparation for our Year 3 Camp later this term, students will also complete a CORE unit on Building Positive Relationships. Throughout this unit, students will develop strategies for working collaboratively, communicating effectively and showing respect for others. They will explore what to expect at camp, practise teamwork and problem-solving skills, and build confidence to ensure they are well prepared for this exciting experience.

We will also continue building students' understanding of Morphology, helping them explore how prefixes, suffixes and base words work together to create meaning. This supports vocabulary growth, spelling accuracy and reading comprehension.

Handwriting will remain an important focus, with students continuing to develop correct letter formation, fluency and automaticity so they can write efficiently and communicate their ideas clearly.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students will continue developing their mathematical understanding across a range of number and geometry concepts. Students will investigate graphs, learning how to collect, represent and interpret data using a variety of displays. They will ask and answer questions using data and explain what different graphs show.

Students will also explore angles, identifying, comparing and describing angles found in everyday objects and shapes. They will begin using mathematical language to classify and discuss different types of angles.

As part of our geometry learning, students will develop their understanding of maps. They will interpret simple maps, use grid references, recognise compass directions and apply their spatial reasoning to navigate familiar environments.

Towards the end of the term, students will return to place value, consolidating their understanding of larger numbers, partitioning numbers in different ways, comparing and ordering numbers, and applying place value knowledge to solve increasingly complex problems.

Throughout all areas of Mathematics, students will continue to develop their reasoning, problem-solving and communication skills, explaining their mathematical thinking using appropriate vocabulary and multiple strategies.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing program will continue to focus on supporting students to develop the social and emotional skills needed to be successful learners and positive members of our school community.

As we prepare for camp, there will be a strong emphasis on building positive relationships, developing resilience, demonstrating independence and working collaboratively with others. Students will explore strategies for managing challenges, communicating respectfully and supporting their peers, while continuing to live our school values of Kindness, Care, Personal Best, Respect.

Reminders

📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives on time and is ready to line up when the music plays.

📌 School Uniform: As the weather remains cool, please ensure all jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled. Please also check the timetable for P.E. days and sports uniform requirements.

📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please continue to provide healthy lunch options and a labelled water bottle each day.

📌 Reading Folders: Students should bring their reading folder each week to support learning both at home and at school.

📌 Camp Information: Please keep an eye on Xuno for camp updates, important dates and any forms that need to be completed prior to our Year 3 Camp.

Important Dates

• Tuesday 21 July: Parent–Teacher Interviews (2:30–6:00 pm) – individual time slots shared via Xuno.
• Thursday 20 August: Book Week Dress-Up Day – come dressed as your favourite book character!
• Friday 21 August: Book Author Visit – a special guest author will join us for the day.
• Friday 4 September: Father's Day Celebration.
• Monday, September 7th - Wednesday, September 9th: Year 3-6 camp at Cave Hill Creek
• Friday 18 September: Last Day of Term 3.
