Year 2 Community News

Dear Families,

 

Welcome to Term 3! We are incredibly proud of the positive way our Year 2 students continue to demonstrate our school values each day. They have returned to school settled, enthusiastic, and ready to learn, making a fantastic start to the term. We look forward to building on this strong foundation as students continue to grow in confidence, independence, and their learning throughout Term 3.

 

Below is an overview of the exciting learning experiences and key curriculum areas we will be exploring this term. We look forward to another rewarding term of learning together!

Curriculum News

English

This term, in English Core, students will explore World Geography: Continents and Oceans and complete their first novel study of The Magic Faraway Tree. Through reading, discussion, and writing, students will build their knowledge of geography while developing their comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.

 

In Writing, students will focus on:

  • expanding sentences using adjectives and adverbs
  • planning and writing well-structured paragraphs with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence
  • using conjunctions to join and extend ideas
  • editing their writing to correctly use capital letters, punctuation, and spelling.

     

In Sounds-Write, students will continue exploring more complex spelling patterns, learning the different ways sounds can be represented in words, and applying this knowledge to improve both their reading and spelling.

Mathematics

In Maths this term, students will strengthen their number knowledge and develop their mathematical thinking. They will:

  • measure, compare and estimate capacity and volume using informal and formal units
  • read, write, order and compare numbers to 1,000
  • practise efficient addition and subtraction strategies, including mental and written methods
  • explore chance by describing events as certain, likely, unlikely or impossible
  • explore multiplication and division through equal groups, arrays and repeated addition.

Wellbeing

We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best.

This term, students will focus on:

  • strengthening positive friendships and resolving minor conflicts respectfully
  • showing empathy and understanding different perspectives
  • demonstrating independence, responsibility, and organisation in the classroom
  • using self-regulation and problem-solving strategies to manage emotions and make positive choices.

Reminders

📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives at school on time. Students should line up in roll order when the music plays and be ready to enter the classroom when the bell rings. If you arrive after the bell, you will need a late pass from the office.

📌 Reading Satchels: Please ensure your child brings their reading satchel with them to school on their library day. 

📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please provide healthy snacks, lunch each day, and a water bottle filled with water. Please ensure all items are clearly labelled.


Important Dates

  • Tuesday 21 July: Parent–Teacher Interviews (2:30–6:00 pm) – individual time slots shared via Xuno.
  • Thursday 20 August: Book Week Dress-Up Day – come dressed as your favourite book character!
  • Friday 21 August: Book Author Visit – a special guest author will join us for the day.
  • Tuesday 25–Thursday 27 August: Grade 1/2 Swimming Program at Splash.
  • Friday 4 September: Father's Day Celebration.
  • Friday 18 September: Last Day of Term 3.
