Year 1 Community News

Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 3! We are so proud of how much our Grade 1 learners have grown, and we can’t wait to share another term filled with curiosity and discovery. This term, we will set off on an exciting journey as we learn all about Australia and our place in the world, while also engaging in meaningful Maths experiences and rich English learning.
Curriculum News
English
This term, students will explore Australia and Our Place in the World through stories, maps, images and discussion. They will learn about Australia’s location, neighbouring countries, states and territories, and the strong connection First Nations peoples have with Country. Students will also consider how people are connected to the places they call home.
In Writing, students will focus on:
- using adjectives and adverbs
- planning a single paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion
- using capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks correctly
In Sounds-Write, students will continue exploring different sounds and the various ways they can be spelled.
Mathematics
In Maths this term, students will build confidence with numbers and explore mathematical concepts through hands-on investigations. They will:
- explore capacity and volume by comparing how much different containers can hold
- compare numbers using the language of more than, less than and equal to
- collect, sort and represent information using graphs
- read, write, order and count numbers to 40
- practise addition and subtraction using a range of strategies.
Wellbeing
We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best.
This term, students will focus on:
- building positive friendships and working cooperatively with others
- recognising, understanding, and expressing their emotions
- developing independence and confidence in classroom routines
- using mindfulness and self-regulation strategies to manage their emotions and wellbeing.
Reminders
📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives at school on time. Students should line up in roll order when the music plays and be ready to enter the classroom when the bell rings. If you arrive after the bell, you will need a late pass from the office.
📌 Reading Satchels: Please ensure your child brings their reading satchel with them to school on their library day.
📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please provide healthy snacks, lunch each day, and a water bottle filled with water. Please ensure all items are clearly labelled.
Important Dates
- Tuesday 21 July: Parent–Teacher Interviews (2:30–6:00 pm) – individual time slots shared via Xuno.
- Thursday 20 August: Book Week Dress-Up Day – come dressed as your favourite book character!
- Friday 21 August: Book Author Visit – a special guest author will join us for the day.
- Tuesday 25–Thursday 27 August: Grade 1/2 Swimming Program at Splash.
- Friday 4 September: Father's Day Celebration.
- Friday 18 September: Last Day of Term 3.
