Foundation Community News

Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 3! It is hard to believe we are officially halfway through your child's first year of school. We are so proud of the growth our Foundation students have shown and the positive way they continue to demonstrate our school values each day.
Our students have returned settled, enthusiastic, and ready to learn. We look forward to building on the strong foundations from Semester One as they continue to grow in confidence, independence, and their learning throughout Term 3.
Below is an overview of the exciting learning experiences and key curriculum areas we will be exploring this term!
Curriculum News
English
This term, in English CORE, students will explore Dinosaurs, learning about the fascinating world of dinosaurs and discovering how fossils help us understand creatures from the past. Students will also complete a picture book study of two rich mentor texts to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
In Writing, students will focus on:
- expanding sentences by using descriptive adjectives
- using connecting words to join and extend ideas
- correctly using capital letters and full stops in their writing
- writing short stories that include a character, setting, feeling, problem, action, and ending.
In Story Champs, students will focus on strengthening their story retell and story generation skills by identifying the six key story elements: character, setting, problem, feeling, action, and ending. They will also explore rich vocabulary ("sparkle words") and develop an understanding of their meanings.
In Sounds-Write, students will continue segmenting and blending words with four, five, and six sounds, applying this knowledge to become more accurate and confident readers and writers.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term, students will continue developing their number sense and mathematical understanding through hands-on learning and problem-solving. They will:
- recognise, name and describe common flat shapes and identify them in everyday objects
- sequence the days of the week and describe the order of daily events using language such as before, after, yesterday, today and tomorrow
- compare and order objects by length, capacity and mass using direct comparison
- recognise, create and continue repeating patterns
- develop a deeper understanding of numbers to 10 by breaking apart and combining numbers in different ways.
Wellbeing
We will continue to support students in developing their social and emotional skills
through our school values of Kindness, Care, Respect, and Personal Best.
This term, students will focus on:
- strengthening positive friendships and resolving minor conflicts respectfully
- showing empathy and understanding different perspectives
- demonstrating independence, responsibility, and organisation in the classroom
- using self-regulation and problem-solving strategies to manage emotions and make positive choices.
