Year 6 Community News
Hello everyone, and welcome to Term 3!
We’re very excited to continue the year with our fantastic Grade 6 students.
Term 3 is an exciting and important term for our senior students as they continue to build on the skills, knowledge and confidence developed throughout the first half of the year. As they move through their final year of primary school, students will be challenged to deepen their learning, demonstrate greater independence, and take on increasing leadership opportunities within our school community.
Our Grade 6 students will continue to develop in their leadership roles, taking on greater responsibility and demonstrating initiative within our school community. We will keep encouraging them to reflect on their strengths, grow their confidence, and contribute positively as leaders. We also have some exciting opportunities ahead in Term 3, including our Grade 6 camp, participation in the Summer Lightning Premiership, and a range of learning experiences that will help students strengthen their teamwork, resilience and leadership skills.
Curriculum News
English
In English, Year 6 students will explore a novel called NEVERMOOR, by Jessica Townsend. Through reading and discussing the text, students will explore themes such as belonging, courage, friendship and identity while analysing how authors create engaging characters, settings and plot developments. Students will respond to the novel through a range of activities including discussion, comprehension tasks, vocabulary development and written responses. They will also examine the author's use of language and literary techniques, making connections between the events of the novel and their own experiences and understanding of the world.
In the second half of the term, students will investigate the topic of IMMIGRATION and the many ways migration has shaped Australia’s communities and culture. Through a range of informative texts, historical sources and class discussions, students will investigate why people choose or are forced to move to new countries, the challenges they may face, and the contributions migrants have made to Australian society. Students will develop their understanding of different perspectives while building their skills in research, note-taking, discussion and written communication, making connections between historical migration stories and contemporary experiences.
Mathematics
Time - Students will develop their understanding of time by reading, interpreting and solving problems involving timetables, elapsed time, and the conversion between different units of time. They will apply these skills to real-world contexts and problem-solving situations.
Addition and Subtraction of Decimals - Students will strengthen their understanding of place value as they add and subtract decimals accurately. They will use a range of strategies to solve practical problems involving money, measurement and other real-life situations.
Multiplication and Division of Decimals - Students will learn efficient strategies for multiplying and dividing decimals, building their understanding of place value and number patterns. They will apply these skills to solve increasingly complex mathematical problems and real-world scenarios.
Wellbeing
Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.
This term, we are highlighting Turrun’s value of CARE and how it can be practised beyond the classroom. At home, families can support this by encouraging children to look out for others, show empathy, and offer help when it is needed. Simple actions such as checking in on a sibling, helping with household tasks, or being mindful of others’ feelings all help to build a strong sense of care.
Parents and carers can model our term disposition of CURIOSITY by asking open-ended questions, exploring new topics together, and encouraging children to wonder, investigate and seek answers. Visiting libraries, discussing current events, trying new experiences, and supporting children to ask questions about the world around them are all great ways to foster a curious and inquisitive mindset.
Reminders
- PE sessions take place on a Thursday while year level sport takes place on a FRIDAY, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate.
- Our library sessions take place every TUESDAY. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries. We will endeavour to check diaries every Friday
