Year 5 Community News

Hello everyone, and welcome to Term 3 in Grade 5 for 2026.

It has been great reconnecting with students after the break and settling back into classroom routines for the new term. The students have returned with a positive attitude and have quickly refocused on their learning.

We have already seen our school values of Respect, Care, Kindness and Personal Best continue to shine through in the way students support one another and approach their work.

As we move through Term 3, we are looking forward to building on the learning from earlier in the year and continuing to strengthen both skills and confidence across all areas. We have some exciting events this term including the Year 3-6 camp at Cave Hill Creek and Summer Lightning Prem.

If you have not yet had the chance to visit our classroom, you are always welcome to pop in.

We are looking forward to a productive and successful term with this great group of students.

Curriculum News

English

In English, Year 5 students will begin the term exploring the topic of Human Ingenuity and Environmental Impact. Through a range of engaging texts, students will learn about how human ideas, inventions, and innovations have shaped the world we live in today, as well as how these developments can impact the natural environment. They will build their comprehension skills by identifying key ideas, discussing different viewpoints, and responding through written and oral tasks. Students will also continue to develop their vocabulary and understanding while making connections between human progress and the world around them.

In the second half of the term, students will focus on the Gold Era, exploring texts that highlight important periods of change, discovery, and growth. They will learn about how people and events during this time contributed to shaping societies and creating new opportunities. Through a variety of informative and narrative texts, students will strengthen their comprehension through discussion, note-taking, and written responses, while continuing to build their understanding of history and its relevance to the present day.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, Year 5 students will explore a broad range of measurement, statistics, chance, and financial concepts through hands-on learning, real-world problem solving, and practical investigations.

Length, Mass, Volume and Capacity

Students will develop their understanding of measurement by estimating, measuring, and comparing length, mass, and volume/capacity. They will learn to select appropriate units and use a range of tools accurately in real-life contexts.

Perimeter and Area

Students will explore how to calculate the perimeter and area of a range of shapes. They will investigate how these concepts are used in everyday situations such as designing spaces and planning layouts.

Time

Students will build their understanding of time by reading timetables, calculating elapsed time, and solving problems involving hours, minutes, and seconds. They will apply these skills to practical scenarios to strengthen accuracy and fluency.

Chance

Students will explore probability by investigating the likelihood of events. They will describe outcomes using everyday language such as certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible, and begin to represent simple probabilities.

Money

Students will develop financial literacy by working with money in practical contexts. They will calculate totals, work out change, and solve problems involving budgeting and spending in real-life situations.

Data

Students will learn how to collect, organise, display, and interpret data. They will create and analyse tables and graphs, identify patterns, and draw conclusions based on information.

Across all topics, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, use mathematical language, and apply their skills to meaningful, real-world problems.

Wellbeing

Our school values remain at the heart of everything we do: RESPECT, KINDNESS, CARE, and PERSONAL BEST. Alongside these, we foster our four learning dispositions: COMMITMENT, CURIOSITY, COURAGE, and COLLABORATION.

This term, we are highlighting Turrun’s value of Care and our learning disposition of Curiosity, and how both can be practised beyond the classroom. At home, families can support this by encouraging children to show care for others and approach the world with a sense of wonder and interest. Simple actions such as checking in on family members, helping around the home, asking thoughtful questions, and exploring new ideas all help to build a strong sense of care and curiosity.

Parents and carers can model these by showing care through their everyday actions and by demonstrating curiosity alongside their children. This might include taking time to listen and respond thoughtfully, showing kindness in interactions with others, asking questions, exploring new interests together, and encouraging children to wonder about how and why things happen. These everyday moments help children understand that care and curiosity are shown through how we treat others and how we engage with the world around us.

Reminders

PE sessions take place on a Monday while year level sport takes place on a FRIDAY, students should be in full sports uniform on these days to ensure they are ready to participate.
Our library sessions take place every TUESDAY. On this day, students should bring their reading satchels so they can borrow and take-home new reading materials. At home reading is encouraged and we ask students to log this in their diaries. We will endeavour to check diaries every Friday
