Year 4 Community News

Dear Families, 

Welcome to Term 3!

We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break. We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 4 students continue to demonstrate our school values each day. Students have worked hard throughout the first half of the year, and we are excited to build on this success as we begin another engaging term of learning.

Curriculum News

English

This term in Literacy, students will explore our CORE Humanities unit on the Global Middle Ages. Through this unit, students will investigate how societies developed across Europe, the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world following the fall of the Roman Empire. They will examine how people lived during this period, including the roles of kings, nobles, knights, peasants and religious leaders, while exploring the importance of trade, innovation and cultural exchange.

Students will engage with a range of rich historical texts to build their knowledge and participate in structured discussions to deepen their understanding. They will apply their learning through a variety of writing tasks, including informative, persuasive and comparative texts, while continuing to strengthen their sentence construction, paragraph organisation and use of topic-specific vocabulary.

In preparation for our Year 4 Camp later this term, students will also complete a CORE unit on Building Positive Relationships. Throughout this unit, students will develop strategies for effective communication, teamwork, resilience and problem-solving. They will explore what to expect at camp, strengthen their independence and build the confidence needed to make the most of this exciting experience.

We will also continue building students' understanding of Morphology, exploring how prefixes, suffixes and base words contribute to word meaning. This supports vocabulary development, spelling accuracy and reading comprehension.

Handwriting will remain an important focus, with students continuing to develop fluency, legibility and automaticity so they can write efficiently and communicate their ideas clearly as they move towards using pen in their workbooks.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students will develop their understanding across a range of geometry, measurement and statistics concepts.

Students will investigate graphs, learning how to collect, represent and interpret data using a variety of graph types. They will draw conclusions from data displays and explain their thinking using appropriate mathematical language.

Students will also explore angles, identifying, comparing and measuring angles while recognising them in everyday objects and geometric shapes.

As part of our geometry learning, students will investigate maps, developing their understanding of grid references, coordinates, compass directions and scale to navigate and interpret different environments.

Students will explore parallel and perpendicular lines, identifying these relationships within shapes and real-world examples while developing their geometric reasoning.

They will also investigate the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, comparing their features, identifying edges, vertices and faces, and using mathematical vocabulary to describe and classify shapes accurately.

Throughout all areas of Mathematics, students will continue developing their reasoning, problem-solving and communication skills, explaining their mathematical thinking using a range of strategies and appropriate mathematical language.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing program will continue to support students in developing the social and emotional skills needed to be successful learners and positive members of our school community.

As we prepare for camp, there will be a strong emphasis on building positive relationships, developing resilience, demonstrating independence and working collaboratively with others. Students will explore strategies for managing challenges, communicating respectfully and supporting their peers, while continuing to demonstrate our school values of Kindness, Care, Personal Best, Respect.

Reminders

📌 Morning Routine: Please ensure your child arrives on time and is ready to line up when the music plays.

📌 School Uniform: As the weather remains cool, please ensure all jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled. Please also check the timetable for P.E. days and sports uniform requirements.

📌 Lunchboxes & Water Bottles: Please continue to provide healthy lunch options and a labelled water bottle each day.

📌 Reading Folders: Students should continue bringing their reading folder each week to support learning both at home and at school.

📌 Camp Information: Please keep an eye on Xuno for camp updates, important dates and any forms that need to be completed prior to our Year 4 Camp.

• Tuesday 21 July: Parent–Teacher Interviews (2:30–6:00 pm) – individual time slots shared via Xuno.
• Thursday 20 August: Book Week Dress-Up Day – come dressed as your favourite book character!
• Friday 21 August: Book Author Visit – a special guest author will join us for the day.
• Friday 4 September: Father's Day Celebration.
• Monday, September 7th - Wednesday, September 9th: Year 3-6 camp at Cave Hill Creek
• Friday 18 September: Last Day of Term 3.
