From Simone McGenniskin, Senior School Auslan teacher
To finish off this amazing semester, our Year 3-6’s enjoyed learning the signs for vegetables! They have learnt the signs for vegetable, potato, pumpkin, broccoli, carrot, onion, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, celery and garlic.
We continued playing shopping centres with only fruits and vegetables, prompting many discussions about students’ favourite fruits/veggies in Auslan.
Luckily, the prep team was happy to lend us their 3D food toys so we were able to play with items that give us a physical sense of where the iconicity comes from - a new term learnt by our year 5’s and 6’s meaning that the sign is like the image or thing itself.

Early finishers enjoyed board games in week 9 with some reaching level 2 which you can print and play with your family below! Last fortnight’s newsletter had level 1.

Week 10 has a strong focus on Deaf culture. Students have brainstormed how to better design a home for a Deaf family and drawn ideas in their book of new inventions or home layouts. Below is 5B’s brainstorm before watching an informative video on spaces designed for optimal accessibility (linked here). This brainstorm goes to show just how much these students have learned during their years at NMPS as they have studied Auslan.

How can I help?
Print and practice: Print and play this week’s new boardgame together! Each fortnight a more difficult game will be included below.
