Year 1 News

From Yolanda Andrews, Year 1A teacher
Triumphant to the end!
What a crazy few weeks we’ve had! With the excitement of the World Cup, the NBA Finals, and James Hird announcing his desire to return as coach of the mighty Bombers, it’s hard to imagine anyone getting much learning done. But these kids proved otherwise!
In true NMPS spirit, the Year 1s rose to the challenge and accomplished so much. From exploring tricky digraphs and unpacking the Writing Process to capturing caterpillars, there has been no stopping these superstars!
In Word Study, the Year 1s have been focusing on the oi, oy and oo digraphs. An interesting fact: many of the students think dictation is actually quite cool!
In Writing, the students have been working hard to learn about the Writing Process. This is a step-by-step approach that helps writers create a polished piece of work. It typically consists of five overlapping and recursive stages: prewriting (planning), drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
We also include an additional first step, character development, which the students really enjoy. This stage encourages them to explore their characters in depth, focusing on strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits to build richer and more engaging stories.
For Year 1 students, the Writing Process can be quite lengthy, and we would like to congratulate them on their persistence and hard work throughout each stage. Below is an excellent example of this journey, beginning with character development, followed by planning (beginning, middle and end), a detailed draft, editing and revising and finally, the published story.
In Numeracy, we have been exploring measurement, with a focus on area and perimeter. The Year 1s have been using both formal and informal units of measurement and felt very grown-up using rulers to measure and compare.
In Gardening, the students enjoyed de-caterpillaring the garden boxes at the Molesworth Street campus. There was no hiding from these budding green thumbs, with some students even forming strong bonds with the cute little green worms!
