Year 11 VCE Biology: Digestive System Simulation

Our Year 11 Biology students brought digestion to life this term with a hands-on simulation tied to VCE Biology Unit 1, Area of Study 2. Students explored how specialised cells and organ systems work together by modelling the journey food takes from mouth to absorption.
Using everyday foods to represent the three main macronutrients: carbohydrates (bread), lipids (fats and oils) and proteins (meat), students acted out each stage of digestion.
They observed where and how enzymes such as amylase, lipase and protease break down different foods, and learned how nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the small intestine.
The activity was both educational and highly engaging, giving students a memorable way to understand a complex system. Congratulations to all Year 11 Biology students for their enthusiasm and participation. It’s wonderful to see science come alive in our classrooms!
