As the whole school celebrated World Kindness Day, Thursday 13th Novemebr, in the classrooms students have been developing links between Respectful Relationship and our Karoo Value of Kindness.

In Topic 7: Gender norms and stereotypes and Topic 8: Positive gender relations, students across Karoo have been exploring how kindness, respect and fairness shape the way we interact with others. Each year level has taken a developmentally appropriate look at how gender expectations can influence people’s experiences, and how we can build positive, respectful relationships with everyone in our community.

Our Foundation students have been learning to gently challenge negative gender norms by recognising that everyone is unique and valued. They have also begun exploring how positive gender relations—such as including others, sharing, and using kind words—help create a safe and supportive environment.

In Years 1 and 2, students are deepening their appreciation of difference by discussing how people express themselves in diverse ways. They are practising respectful and gender-friendly behaviours, such as ensuring games, roles, and activities are welcoming and fair to all students.

Students in Years 3 and 4 are examining how gender stereotypes can appear in books, media and everyday life, and how these stereotypes can influence the way people are treated. They are learning to identify and demonstrate respectful, gender-inclusive behaviours and are finding ways to challenge negative norms when they see them in the school or wider community.

Our Years 5 and 6 students are building an understanding of how gender norms can affect attitudes and behaviours during adolescence. They are working to identify behaviours that show respect, fairness and personal boundaries, and are learning to normalise actions that uphold the rights of others within friendships and peer relationships.

The Respectful Relationships curriculum provide a strong foundation for the way we learn, play and care for one another at school. At Karoo, Respectful Relationships is closely connected to our school values of Kindness, Personal Excellence and Tenacity
