Some words from the Principal

Mrs Courtney Hoffmann

Dear Karoo PS Community,

2026 Student Leadership

Over the past few weeks, the Year 5 students, teachers, specialist and leadership teams have worked with our current student captains to work through the process to help us identify next year’s school leaders. The aim is to create a process that provides students with a realistic experience of an application scenario. This began in the Year 5 Writing sessions, where students worked to create a speech for their preferred role. Students then delivered School Captain and Student Voice Captain speeches to the entire Year 5 cohort. From there, students were shortlisted by teachers and current School Leaders to progress to the interview stage.

In their interview, students that had been shortlisted were asked the questions like:

  • What do you think are some characteristics that an effective leader has?
  • What are your current strengths as a leader and what do you believe you need to enhance?
  • What are some of the Actions you would like to do as a Captain?

Below are some of the key highlights of the student interview process:

  • Students spoke with confidence
  • Students overcame their nerves
  • All students mentioned the school values and how they display them
  • Many students spoke about the fact that they are 'still a leader' regardless of whether they received a leadership title or not
  • All students demonstrated their strengths and individuality

On Thursday the 16th of November our shortlisted student leader applicants were notified of the successful 2026 School Captain and Student Voice Captain candidates.

The next step in our 2026 Student Leadership process will be finalising our Wellbeing Captains, Visual Arts Captains, Sport Captains, Performing Arts Captains, Library Captains, Media Captains and Mandarin Captains.  This process involves the students' presenting speeches to their peers, classroom and specialist teachers and then the final captains identified based on student and teacher feedback.

All 2026 student leaders will be presented their leadership badges at the Leadership Assembly on Friday 13th December.

Student Transition Sessions for 2026

This Friday our students will take part in Step Up Day 1.  During this time, students will move into their 2026 year level and learn about the exciting learning and events that occur in their new year level and the expectations.  The purpose is to support our students during their transition process.  On Tuesday 9th December, our students will participate in their Step Up Day 2.  On this day our students will find out their 2026 class teacher and classmates and will receive a letter from their 2026 teacher welcoming them to their new class.

End of Year Extravaganza and Christmas Raffle

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  With only 1 month to go until the end of the 2025 school year, our traditional Christmas Raffle Stocking will take centre stage in our office from this week!  We welcome our community's donations, as all donations will go towards our final assembly Christmas Raffle!  Raffle tickets will be on sale in the coming weeks.  We will be drawing the raffle at the end of our Award Ceremony on Wednesday 18th December so there is still plenty of time to donate or buy tickets.  All money raised is going toward the upgrading of our basketball courts.  I thank you in advance for your support.

I look forward to seeing you around our wonderful school!

Warm Regards,
