Mosaic Stepping Stones

The Acacia children are working on a special project for our garden and it involved lots of smashing! We're making a stepping stone for around the vegie patch and are using tiles to create a mosaic design in the shape of a flower. A sunflower, because we've planted some sunflower seeds and they are already starting to sprout.

We began by putting safety goggles on if we were using the hammer and putting the tiles in between 2 towels to stop any pieces flying away. The children took turns using all their muscles to break the tiles into small pieces. When we had broken the tiles, we sorted them into different sections of the container according to colour.

We mixed up some tile adhesive which was a bit like cake icing. After drawing the shape of our flower on the paver, we spread adhesive and began carefully filling each section with small pieces of tile. We had black in the middle, yellow petals around it and then we used blue tiles to fill in the rest of the design. It was like doing a big jigsaw puzzle. The children had to think about how big or small the pieces needed to be depending on where they were going to go.

Now it’s grouted and ready to go in the garden and the other groups are going to make one too so our garden will look amazing!
