Prep News

What a wonderful week of learning, creativity, and excitement we’ve had in Prep! Our classrooms have been buzzing with rich discussions, hands-on activities, and lots of smiles as students continue to grow in confidence and independence. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:
Literacy
This week in Literacy, we focused on two new digraphs:
ee – “teenie tiny green tree”
Students learnt that when ee sits together, it often makes the long /e/ sound. We explored this through word hunts, partner reading, and engaging small-group games. They loved finding ee words hidden around the room!
ea – “seals on the beach”
We also introduced the ea digraph, discovering how it can make the long /e/ sound too. Students enjoyed sorting activities, reading decodable sentences, and discussing the difference between ee and ea.
Writing – Mo Willems Author Study
We wrapped up our Mo Willems-inspired Don’t Let the Pigeon… books! Students planned, drafted, illustrated, and published their own hilarious stories, using Mo Willems’ expressive artwork and humour as inspiration.Their creativity shone through— we had pigeons pleading for everything from pet lions to staying up all night! These will make wonderful keepsakes to celebrate their writing growth this year.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we returned to our unit on Money, reviewing how to identify Australian coins and notes with confidence. Students participated in hands-on tasks such as:
Sorting coins by value and features
Matching coins to price tags
Using play money to “buy” items in a mini-classroom shop
Practising using exact amounts when purchasing
This helped students strengthen their understanding of value, decision-making, and real-life application. We are so proud of how quickly they are picking up these essential skills!
Inquiry
This week marked the exciting finale of our Imaginary Animal Project!
Students:
Finalised their animal designs
Added details to their fact files
Painted their sculptures with care and creativity
Prepared to present to fellow BHNPS peers
The level of imagination was incredible—students created animals with special adaptations, unique habitats, and creative diets. We can’t wait to showcase our work at Friday’s sharing session!
Reminders
Hats: Please ensure your child’s hat is at school every day (Term 4 = no hat, no play!)
