Foundation Spotlight

What a Journey!
The final term of 2025 is here and what an incredible journey it has been for our Foundation students! They have formed wonderful friendships, developed their reading, writing and numeracy skills, and have become increasingly confident and independent learners. We are so proud of the enthusiasm the students bring to their learning each day and the positive attitude they show towards new challenges.
During literacy, students have been exploring long vowel sounds, how they are written and how they sound. Long vowel sounds are pronounced like the letter's name, for instance long A sounds like the ‘A’ at the start of ape.
The Foundations so far have investigated long A (ay & ai) and long E (ee & ea) and are looking forward to learning long I (ie & igh), long O(oa) and all about ‘Robber Y’ (-y & --y).
Look at their Learning in Writing!
During writing students have been focusing on syntax, specifically the difference between sentences and fragments. They have learnt that a complete sentence has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought, whereas fragments are missing one of these components. Students have become ‘Sentence Savers’, fixing fragments and figuring out what to add to create a full sentence.
For example, ‘eat apples’ to ‘Paul eats apples at lunch’.
The Foundations have continued to explore how to make their writing as exciting as it can be by adding awesome adjectives. They have practised adding adjectives to our sentences before focusing on their own writing, editing and adding adjectives where necessary.
Amazing Numeracy Work
During numeracy this term we have been investigating sharing and grouping, foundational skills for division and multiplication. Students have explored the terms equal and fair, what to do if a number cannot be shared equally between two or three groups, and open-ended sharing challenges.
For example, Paul has 20 lollies and he wants to share them equally with the teachers. How many teachers could Paul share with?
In preparation for Grade 1, the Foundation students have also been taking care to practise number formation skills so that they can wow their teachers next year!
SWPBS
This term, during SWPBS we have begun introducing a unit on Bullying Prevention. Students have defined the difference between; kind, disrespectful, and bullying behaviour. They have explored the different types of bullying, how bullying might make people feel and how we can show kindness to those around us. In the coming weeks students will be introduced to the “Stop Walk Talk Method” and what do you do if someone is not respectful to you. We are so proud of how seriously and respectfully the Foundation students are approaching this unit.
We still have lots to do in our final term together, incursions and excursions (rock climbing, a visit from the flying doctors and robotics!), preparation for Grade 1, and the Foundation celebration!
