Academic Pressure

Student's Perspective

My name is Leo, I am a year 11 VM student, and today I will be talking about Academic pressure. With exams coming up, this topic has been on my mind, and I have decided to research it.

Academic pressure has become a very big issue in the past decade with increasing numbers of students perceiving their pathways as unclear or limited. Studies by the CDC have shown that 40-50% of high school students have said they feel hopeless and disengaged in their schoolwork, mainly because they have no idea how it will benefit their future.

Getting through high school in itself is stressful alone navigating  friendships and personal challenges.  Keeping up with schoolwork and the added challenge of trying to pick the right classes to set you up for your future, is simply becoming too much for students to handle.

Although it seems as though the pathway options have improved a lot since, say, the early 2000s, it has become a lot more complicated. You have the options of choosing VCE or VCE-VM, however a lot of students are finding it difficult knowing what the right pathway is.

Many University courses will require a prerequisite class to be taken in Year 12. The pressure of having to choose the right subjects in order to get into University immediately after high school is overwhelming and often affects students’ mental health.

Whilst academic pressure exists, Wantirna College is ensuring that support is available to students experiencing academic pressure. Visiting your YLL or the Careers Counsellors is the best way to get support regarding your career, subject selection, or to chat about different pathways available. They can be contacted via teams or via their email below.
