Mural Opening

Surf Coast Secondary College proudly unveiled a new student-designed mural, co-created by the College’s First Nations students and proud Wiradjuri artist Jessi Rebel, at a special community event held on Friday 14th November.

The mural marked the culmination of this year’s work and now stands as a vibrant symbol of the College’s ongoing commitment to creating a culturally safe and welcoming environment for all students and families.

The opening featured an Acknowledgement of Country, followed by the official unveiling of the mural and reflections from staff and students on the importance of cultural respect and connection. Principal, staff, students, and community members from the Shire, Strong Brother Strong Sister, the Local Aboriginal Educational Community Group (LAECG), the Department of Education, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, and the Gordon gathered to celebrate this important milestone, recognising the contributions of those who continue to strengthen the College’s inclusive culture.

Guests enjoyed light refreshments and the opportunity to meet with members of the College community who play a vital role in supporting First Nations students and upholding the school’s commitment to reconciliation.

Principal Shane Elevato said the mural was an important step in the school’s ongoing journey of reconciliation and respect. “This mural celebrates the way our First Nations students and families from many Countries come together here in Torquay on Wadawurring Country, creating a shared sense of belonging and cultural visibility at Surf Coast Secondary College.”

Year 8 Camp - Phillip Island

After a very long three-hour bus ride (filled with snacks, singalongs, and a few questionable nap positions), we stopped at Cape Woolamai for a walk to the Pinnacles Lookout. The views were amazing and so was the wildlife! We even spotted a snake on the trail, which definitely made everyone walk just a little bit faster.

After checking in to the accommodation, we jumped straight back on the bus and headed to the Koala Conservation Sanctuary.

The koalas were, of course, doing what they do best; sleeping and looking adorable. Then came the main event of the day: the Penguin Parade!

Fun fact: The little penguins of Phillip Island are the smallest species of penguin in the world; they stand only about 33 centimetres tall!

Day two started strong at Clip & Climb, followed by some serious bowling and laser tag battles — teachers vs. students got competitive. In the afternoon, we explored Churchill Island Farm, saw sheep shearing and whip cracking, and even tried milking a cow (not as easy as it looks!). The day wrapped up with a roast dinner and Trivia Night before finishing camp with a sweet stop at the Chocolate Factory.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On the 11th November student's and staff came together to pay tribute to the courageous individuals who have served, and continue to serve our country, honouring their sacrifices.  All students demonstrated our College value of 'Respect' throughout.

We also took this opportunity to formally welcome our new College Captains, Hunter and Finlay and Vice Captains, Sienna and Taitum, who lead the assembly, and celebrated the academic achievements of multiple students.

Year 7 Boys Baseball

Surf Coast Secondary College had 9 students from Year 7 representing our school in Baseball.

The boys worked incredibly hard as a team and were able to successfully make it through the initial, local round where they went on to face several tougher opponents in the following round on November 6th. All games were played at East Belmont Saints Baseball Club.

Regardless of the boys success, one of the biggest achievements was the support the boys showed for one another and the mutual respect for other teams on game day.

Well done team, a fantastic run of success that is much deserved. A big thank you must also be extended to Mr. Butler and to all of the parent helpers and coaches that arrived on these days to show their support for the team, much appreciated!
