Remembrance Day

On Tuesday this week we marked Remembrance Day at the College with services at both campuses, a minute’s silence in classes, and by laying a wreath at the Hamilton RSL service at the Cenotaph.

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. At 11:00am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The Germans called for an armistice in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. The conflict had mobilised over 70 million people, left between 9 and 13 million dead, and as many as one third of these with no grave. The speaker at the Hamilton RSL service spoke about the significance of the unknown soldier as a representative of all who had paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The day remains an important reminder to be grateful for the sacrifice of those who have fought in service of important ideas such as the integrity of national sovereignty, and how it is incumbent on all of us to stand in the face of aggression, lest it become the norm, and lest we forget.

Staff Changes for 2026

At this time of year, as we begin to think about the end of the year and farewells, it is with some regret that I advise of two staff members  who will be moving on from College at the end of this year:

Patricia See will formally conclude at the end of this year after two years on parental leave. Patricia will be spending more time with her young family, and goes with our very best wishes. I am grateful to Patricia for her contribution over almost seven years and she will be missed by her students.

After 20 years of exceptional service to the College, principally in the IT and Technologies areas, Peter Steer will also be concluding at the end of 2025. Peter's work with the first College networks, with the introduction of laptops, the introduction of SIMON, and his pioneering work with the CISCO subject should not be forgotten as technology has progressed. This was work ahead of its time, and positioned the College very well as forward-thinking and innovative in the IT and tech spaces.
