Years 4 & 6

As the end of Week 9 wraps up, let's take a look back on what we have been learning in class over the past fortnight.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been exploring the Probability. We have focused on identifying independent and dependent events—understanding the difference between situations where one event affects another and those where each event stands alone.
We the Mystery Bucket Challenge, an engaging investigation that allowed students to apply their probability skills in a fun and meaningful way. The challenge began with students being told that inside the bucket were ten cubes of varying colours. Their task: determine how many cubes of each colour were inside without ever looking directly at them.
Students took turns drawing one cube at a time, showing it to the class, recording the colour and then returning it to the bucket before the next draw. Because the cubes were always replaced, the activity gave students an excellent opportunity to identify and discuss independent events—each draw had the same probability as the one before. The Year 6's were also introduced to experimental and theoretical probability within this task.
In another task, the class worked together to order the probability of event (spinner) and describe the probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages. We managed to squeeze in some maths games too.
English
You’ve heard of triplets, but have you heard of triples? In English, students learned how the power of three can make their writing clearer, stronger and more engaging.
During our shared reading time, students enjoy spotting triples in the text, and they’ve also experimented with writing their own.
We have also completed our Vocabulary One-Pagers. Each student selected five interesting words from our class novel that they were unfamiliar with. They identified each word’s part of speech, wrote synonyms, used the word in a sentence, and drew a matching illustration. This activity helped deepen their understanding and build confidence in using new vocabulary.
Graduation Speeches
We encourage our Year 6 students to continue working on their graduation speeches over the weekend and bring in their drafts on Monday.
