Principal Report
Leading a school culture of high expectations and respectful relationships
Every four years all government schools undergo a process of review. This process examines in detail the teaching and learning program, co-curricular program and student and staff experience across the school. At the completion of the process, the review panel provides a series of recommendations to the principal, that will then inform the school strategic plan for the coming four years.
The school review at Berwick commenced on Monday, 3rd March and will continue until the end of March. The review panel consists of a Department of Education appointed reviewer, Department Senior Education Improvement Leader and two challenge partners; these partners are experienced principals in other schools. At Berwick College we are fortunate to have the review overseen by a manager from the school governance unit. Throughout the review the panel will meet with staff and students from a range of different curriculum and co-curricular areas. They will be seeking the firsthand experience of life at Berwick College, they will then balance this understanding with their extensive data review.
This is an exceptional opportunity for the school. I am grateful to the panel for the curiosity, commitment and diligence they have already brought to our school. I know that through this process the school will develop a strategic plan that will strengthen our programs to ensure an increase in student achievement, improved connectedness to school for students and student wellbeing.
Last Friday, the school was honoured to induct its student leaders for 2025. The student leaders undertook in front of all their peers to represent the voice and interests of all students. They agreed to act as role models in their learning and in their participation of wider school life. It will be an honour for staff to work with these outstanding students. We were also honoured to have former student, Brad Battin MP, member for Berwick and the Leader of the Opposition, to remind all students to dream big and that all students are leaders.
All staff at Berwick College participated in a valuable learning day today. The particular focus for the day was understanding the needs of neurodivergent students in classrooms and building the capacity of teachers to make learning adjustments to suit the need of each individual students
I look forward to inducting our new parent, staff and student members to School Council at the AGM on Tuesday, 18th March. Together with staff, parents and students, they play a significant part in overseeing school governance.
