School Community Charter

Dear parents/carers

The NSW Department of Education is committed to creating safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments for all students and staff. Public schools in NSW are places that:

  • educate about discrimination

  • work to prevent unlawful discrimination, and

  • deal with unlawful discrimination if it occurs.

State and Commonwealth legislation prohibits discrimination based on gender identity (including trans, transgender and gender diverse), sexual orientation, as well as race, sex, age, disability, family/carer responsibilities, marital, domestic or relationship status.

We understand that families, and communities may hold varying opinions. However, all staff, students, parents/carers and members of our broader school community have the right to be always treated with dignity and respect.

Respectful communication is a right in all workplaces, including public schools. As principal, I am required to respond to potential or actual school related discrimination that is raised by others or observed by me, and report complaints in accordance with departmental policies.

We all have a part to play in creating safe and supportive learning environments that respect and value diversity and are free from discrimination.

Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities. As part of doing what we reasonably can to ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with staff or access to the school site or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police. Unacceptable behaviour can include treating any member of our school community differently on the grounds of their gender identity, sexual orientation, race, disability or age.

The department’s School Community Charter provides further information on the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

We appreciate your support in creating a school environment where everyone in our community feels they belong.

Sincerely,

Maria Iemma
