Mathematics

Welcome
Hello Vermont families and welcome to the Mathematics section of the Nurlendi News! Here is where we will share any exciting resources, news and activities from Maths classes across Vermont Primary School.
Foundation
Foundation students having been counting forward to 20. Here is 0AM making the numbers using Play Do. They've even learned how to count backwards!
Year 1
The Year 1 students have been using informal units to measure. Today 1NF measured the silver trails left by some snails that snuck into Mrs Forster’s classroom.
1CQ have been learning about measuring heights. These students have used Geocubes as an informal unit to see how tall they are.
Year 3
The Year 3 students worked on Split Strategy. Split strategy (also known as partitioning) involves breaking down numbers into their place values (tens, ones, etc.) to simplify addition and subtraction calculations.
Here's an example:
- Problem: 23 + 41
- Split Strategy:
- Break down 23 into 20 + 3
- Break down 41 into 40 + 1
- Combine the tens: 20 + 40 = 60
- Combine the ones: 3 + 1 = 4
- Add the results: 60 + 4 = 64
- Answer: 23 + 41 = 64
Another example (subtraction):
- Problem: 83 - 60
- Split Strategy:
- Think of 83 as 8 tens + 3 ones
- Think of 60 as 6 tens
- Subtract the tens: 8 tens - 6 tens = 2 tens
- Keep the ones: 3 ones
- Combine: 2 tens and 3 ones = 23
- Answer: 83 - 60 = 23
Year 4
The Year 4 students played an addition game from Love Maths called Game of 31. This game is designed to help students develop number sense when using the operation of addition. Students were given a deck of cards which they spread out, picture side face up. Students competed in pairs aiming to be the first to get a score of 31. Students started on 0, then one student choose a card e.g., 3 and turned it over so it couldn’t be used again. The score of the game would then be 3. The next student would turn over a card e.g., 4 and the score would be 7, as the 4 was added to the 3. The student who got to 31 was the winner. Students have to work out which card to pick and what they might do differently next time if they allowed their partner to get to 31 before them.
Maths Parent Videos
The students at Vermont Primary School have developed a large set of instructional videos which are designed to help parents work with their children on Maths at home.
