We are excited to introduce a regular “Learning at Our School” feature in our school newsletter. Each edition, one of our curriculum leaders will share insights into teaching and learning across the school, highlighting what students are exploring in the classroom and how we support their growth.

The first edition is about Mathematics.

This year, our Mathematics focus has been on strengthening consistency and quality of teaching across the school through the use of the Victorian Lesson Plans (VLPs). These high-quality, evidence-based resources support teachers to deliver clear, structured, and engaging mathematics lessons for all students.

The VLPs are closely aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0). Each lesson follows a clear structure, including explicit teaching, guided practice, and opportunities for students to apply their learning through problem-solving. This approach helps students build strong understanding step-by-step, while also developing confidence in explaining their thinking.

For example, in Year 1/2 classrooms, the teacher begins with a clear learning intention and success criteria and models different ways to combine three numbers, using materials such as counters and a ten-frame (for example, showing that 20 can be made with 10 + 5 + 5 or 8 + 7 + 5). Students then practise together, building combinations with hands-on materials and write number sentences. As confidence grows, they move into independent tasks, such as finding multiple ways to make 20 using three numbers

On Wednesday evening, our Mathematics teachers came together for a professional learning meeting to explore the Victorian Lesson Plans in depth. By using these common, high-quality resources, we are working towards ensuring that all students have access to consistent and rigorous mathematics learning. This approach supports teachers in delivering explicit instruction, targeted practice, and meaningful problem-solving opportunities, helping every student to build confidence and success in Mathematics.
