Year 2/3

Science Spotlight: Exploring Light and Sound

This term in Science, our students are exploring the fascinating world of energy, with a particular focus on light and sound. Through hands-on activities, investigations, and collaborative discussions, students learn how light and sound behave and how they are utilised in our everyday lives.

One of the highlights so far has been using LEGO kits to build simple torches. This fun and practical activity allowed students to explore how light travels and how we can control it. They also experimented by shining their torches on different coloured objects and surfaces to observe how light interacts with various colours, noticing which colours reflect more light, which absorb it, and how shadows are formed.

These experiences are helping students deepen their understanding of the properties of light and how we use light sources to solve problems. As we continue the unit, students will also begin exploring sound energy, how it is produced, how it travels, and how it can be changed or controlled.

This unit aligns with the NSW Science and Technology K–6 Syllabus, particularly the following outcomes:

  • ST1-SCI-01/ST2-SCI-01: Light and sound interact with materials in different ways.
  • ST1-PQU-01/ST2-PQU-01 : poses questions to create fair tests that investigate the effects of energy on living things and physical systems.

It has been wonderful to see students working so enthusiastically, asking questions, experimenting, and sharing discoveries with one another. We look forward to more exciting investigations in the coming weeks as we continue to explore the power of energy in our world.
