Building Inclusion and Leadership at Epping Secondary College

Early Term 3 our Year 8 and Year 11 VM students took part in two powerful programs designed to build confidence, connection, and leadership skills.

Our Year 8 cohort participated in the I Belong keynote and workshop, led by African Australian of the Year recipient, Eric Ageyman. Through his inspiring story of resilience, Eric shared how he overcame mental health challenges and low self-esteem to achieve his goals – and how students can do the same. The workshop explored the impact of language, how to counter bullying, and the importance of fostering kindness and inclusion. Students left feeling motivated to create a school culture where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Meanwhile, our Year 11 VM students embarked on an Leadership Program. Over multiple sessions across the year, they will focus on developing skills in leadership formation, teamwork, communication, and public speaking. Highlights included exploring their personal leadership identity, building trust and collaboration through The John Maxwell Leadership Game, and planning their community impact projects. Students learned how to design and implement initiatives that strengthen both the school community and broader community connections. The program concluded with goal-setting, vision planning, and a public speaking challenge, ensuring students not only gained valuable skills but also practical strategies to lead with confidence.

Across both programs, our students demonstrated enthusiasm, growth, and a commitment to making a positive difference in their community.

With a mix of discovery, fun, and a touch of the unexpected, Science Week inspired students to look closer, think deeper, and explore the wonders of our world.A huge thank you to our dedicated Science staff for their creativity, enthusiasm, and hard work in making this week such a memorable success.

Curriculum Day: Strengthening Teaching Through Collaboration and Planning

Curriculum Day provided our teaching staff with a valuable opportunity to step away from the classroom and focus on professional growth. The day was dedicated to deepening our understanding of curriculum design and refining our assessment practices, ensuring that our teaching is engaging, rigorous, and aligned with student needs.

Throughout the day, teachers worked collaboratively within their learning areas to review scope and sequence documents, unpack the Victorian Curriculum, and plan meaningful learning sequences.

Workshops and planning sessions encouraged rich professional dialogue, allowing staff to share strategies, challenge ideas, and build a cohesive approach to teaching and learning across the school. The focus on both curriculum and assessment ensures our students will experience clear, structured learning pathways supported by high-quality feedback.

By investing in this collaborative planning time, we strengthen our ability to deliver a consistent and high-impact education for all students. Our staff left the day with renewed clarity, practical tools and a shared vision on curriculum planning and assessment.
