Welcome to 6B and 2024! Our excitement and optimism were uncontainable as we took our first steps into our final year of primary school. Collaboration, building rich connections, and developing a positive classroom culture of learning, have been the core focuses for Level Six and the whole school in our first week back from the summer break. Please read on for a snapshot of what teaching and learning will look like for 6B and the rest of Level Six.
With a lens of ‘Identity,’ students began their first day of the year by reconnecting and revelling in each other’s tales of their holiday adventures. A fundamental aspect of the learning was the connection between one’s core values and their identity. Students reflected upon their individual values and then discussed connections across their class. Drawing upon this thinking, students developed their ideal vision of a 6B learning community that would allow each and every student to feel a strong sense of belonging. Below are some statements from 6B students…
“We are open-minded to new possibilities and others’ perspectives and choices” - Izzy
“We will produce positive energy and self-confidence in our learning and around our peers.” - Amelia
“We respect people’s choices and opinions. We value opportunities to have a challenge, and we also help each other when they face struggles.” - Sophie
This year, we have begun a whole school shift to a new model of social and emotional learning, informed by The Resilience Project (TRP). Founded by a primary school teacher, the purpose of TRP is to teach positive mental health strategies under the four pillars of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM) and Emotional Literacy. 6B have been gradually introduced to this new learning approach by making connections to our existing whole school approaches, such as the Learning Pit, Learning Norms and Mind, Body & Us.
Below are images of 6B students and their gratitude reflections:
One aspect of TRP that has made an outstanding impression on the class are the daily, wellbeing check-ins called GEM chats. They are designed to promote reflection, dialogue and a positive classroom climate of sharing. Consider your response to the following GEM chat prompt…
What is one of the happiest moments for you this week?
Another incredible opportunity that Level Six students are presented with is Year 6 sport, with 2024 promising to be action-packed and filled with sporting competitions. This year marks a shift in the Year 6 sport program, from once a term round robin tournaments, to weekly Interschool Sport competitions with other schools in our district. 6B and students across the level have had the opportunity to train and practice in basketball, volleyball, tennis, softball, Danish rounders and cricket. Below are some images of students in their Year 6 Sport Uniform, about to go to their morning training sessions.
