2C

Welcome to another year of fantastic learning in 2C!

In the first week of school, we aimed to build of a classroom culture of belonging and learning, where all students could feel safe and heard. We explored the foundations for understanding the learners themselves and the community around them through looking at Identity, Collaboration, Wellbeing and a Growth Mindset.

In particular, learners loved building their understanding of our School Value Global Empathy through looking at making connections between cultures. As a class, we created a shared definition of culture, which was “It is the ideas, rules and behaviour that a group of people follow”. We then looked at aspects of what makes up a culture, such as clothes, food, traditions, and languages.

Afterwards, learners split off to independently write about some of their favourite things in their own cultures.

During circle time, learners were asked the question, “What are you most proud of about your culture and why?”. Here are some responses:

“I am most proud about being Chinese because there is the Great Wall of China!” - Yihao

“I am most proud about the celebrations because during Chinese New Year there are lots of fireworks.”  - Megan

“I am from the Philippines and I am most proud about our food because it is so yummy!” -  Karl.

“I am proud about being from Nepal because Mt. Everest is there!” – Aston.

“I am Sri Lankan and I am proud about celebrations such as Vesak because we make paper lanterns to hang up around the house.” – Sithuka.

In our reflection, we agreed that all cultures are important and unique, and we should show respect through using our listening skills and positive language.
