Year 6 News

Reading
This week during Reading, Year 6 students have been summarising a fiction text using the “somebody, wanted, but, so, then” strategy. This supports students by providing a framework when summarising the action of a story by identifying the key events. Students used picture story books and novels to complete this task. Year 6 students have really enjoyed using this strategy to summarise their fiction texts, as they know exactly how their summaries need to be laid out.

“I enjoy summarising using the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then strategy because it helps me understand the messages of the story.” - Quinn 6B
Writing
In writing, we have continued our exploration of persuasive writing. The students chose their own topic, and then created a persuasive piece that included persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, exaggeration and emotive language! These skills will be incredibly important as we move into our next topic of debating!
Students were excited to explore the history of debates and why it's an important skill for all students to have. During next week the grade 6 students will be exploring constructive listening, critical

Maths
Over the past fortnight, the Year 6 students have been focussing on measuring an array of acute, obtuse and reflex angles. They have been using protractors to calculate the space between joined lines and identify them in degrees. Students have also been exposed to different types of triangles such as equilateral, scalene, isosceles and right angle triangles. They have been encouraged to draw and name them showing how different triangles have varying edges.
“I enjoyed using a protractor when learning about angles” - Ibrahim 6B“I liked learning about the different families of 2D shapes” - Rami 6E “It was really fun drawing all the different angles, acute angles are below 90 degrees” - Noah 6E “I've learnt about the different types of triangles.” - Mk 6A

Inquiry
Our Year 6 students have been boldly going where no class has gone before—at least in their imaginations! As part of their lead-up to an exciting excursion to the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC), students have been delving into the challenges and possibilities of living and working on Mars. In class, they’ve explored how people might grow food, breathe, and stay safe on Mars, and how robots can help with daily tasks. This exciting topic has sparked lots of curiosity and teamwork, with students thinking like real scientists and astronauts. Their visit to VSSEC will give them a chance to take part in hands-on space activities and see what it’s really like to be part of a space mission!

Social and Emotional Learning
In the past two weeks in SEL, students explored the meaning of Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. Through class discussions, videos, and reading The Rabbits, they reflected on the Stolen Generations and why acknowledging the past is important. In class we explored why saying sorry matters, the purpose of Reconciliation Week and how we can work toward healing and understanding as a Nation. The students wrote poems expressing their feelings and awareness of the grief of the First Nations people. Some students were asked to share their pieces at assembly.
We also explored how to identify when we need help, and who we can ask for help. We looked into ‘Helping Hands” and named people that we can ask for help, focusing on people that we could ask, other than immediate family members. This opened up the conversation for who to turn to when solving interpersonal conflicts and listening to the other person to resolve the issue, and not just argue their own point.
“I learnt how to be a good friend, by learning that I can manage conflict without blaming” - Jorja 6E “I like making new friends, but sometimes it's hard” Mk 6A

“These are people I can rely on!” Titan 6C
