Foundation News

Reading

During Reading, Foundation students have been focusing on making connections with stories to their own lives. This is called a text-to-self connection. They have engaged with a wide range of stories from the school library and classroom libraries. Students have also been making predictions before shared reading tasks. Classes have discussed how clues from the front cover of the book can be used to help determine what will happen in the story. Students have also been doing a wonderful job identifying the new sounds learned during Sounds-Write lessons, in their reading. We have been focusing on the speech sounds for y and z and the symbols that represent them.

“The boy was sad, he was frowning” - Isaac FC

Writing

During writing lessons, the Foundation cohort has begun learning about recounts. Students discussed what they did over the weekend to get started using terms such as first, next, then, and last. These important words help writers to structure a recount and students explore using them to write about what they did on the weekend. They have also been attempting to write their own sentences to express special events in their recount writing. All students have been displaying our school value of resilience when writing. It can be a challenge to record the speech sounds in print and all students are having a go and building their skills. Well done Foundation!

Maths

During Maths, Foundation students have been exploring addition and subtraction through the use of some of our favourite manipulatives such as linking cubes and teddies. They also used counters, number lines, and drawings to help solve simple problems like putting numbers together and taking some away. Working in pairs and small groups, students shared their thinking and explained how they found their answers.

Inquiry

Following the dance incursion with a very talented dance instructor from DAAM School of Dance, students had the opportunity to reflect on this experience. As a class, they reviewed the different types of dance moves and routines learned and shared them with their peers who did not attend. Students welcomed their peers to learn their own dance moves as well! The teachers are extremely proud of all students and wanted to make a special note of the students who have shared their dance experience during our school assembly!

Social and Emotional Learning

During Social Emotional Learning, Foundation students have been learning what it means to be friendly in the classroom and playground. They worked in small groups to create and act out friendly behaviours, helping others recognise what kindness looks like in action. Students enjoyed guessing each pose and discussing how friendly choices can make others feel happy, safe, and included. The Foundation students continue to build positive relationships and understand how their actions affect others.

Special Event - Dance Incursion

The Foundation Cohort had a fantastic time participating in a high-energy dance incursion from DAAM school of dance! Through music and movement, students explored rhythm, coordination, and creative expression. Working in small groups, they learned to take turns, share ideas, and support one another as they created simple dance routines. The experience encouraged teamwork and helped build a strong sense of belonging as students celebrated one another. It was fantastic seeing the foundation students dance with their peers from other classes too!
