Year 5/6 Report

Term 2 2025

As Term 2 comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a busy and productive few months. Our students have shown great dedication, putting in consistent effort and making fantastic progress in their learning. It’s been wonderful to see their hard work and enthusiasm shine through across all areas of school life.

Literacy

In Reading, students have explored and applied their comprehension skills for a range of skills such as visualising, text connections, synthesising, inferring, analysing and critiquing. In Writing, students have explored mystery texts and have been learning to identify and incorporate various features such as descriptive language and foreshadowing. Students have followed the 5 stages of writing while exploring their imagination to create their very own mystery stories. We are so proud of the stories that have been created! These mystery stories include crime, clues, alibis and character motivation.

Students then went onto explore and analyse the structure of a variety of poems. Students were able to recognise the poems needed to include rhyming words, stanza, lines and used patterns. Students created concrete poems, limericks and ballads.

Recently our Grade 5/6 students have been hard at work honing their research and writing skills to craft biographies of influential figures. During this unit, students selected a notable person of interest and embarked on a detailed research journey to uncover key facts and stories that shaped their subject’s life.

Using both digital resources, students gathered information to build a well-structured biography that includes four key components: Early Life, Career, Significant Events, and Achievements. Through this process, they developed not only their reading and note-taking skills, but also their ability to organize information logically and write in a formal, informative tone.

Numeracy

This term, our Grade 5/6 students have continued building their knowledge by diving into some exciting and challenging areas of mathematics. They’ve been developing their algebra skills by identifying patterns and using formulas to determine missing components in number sentences. Students have also been exploring the order of operations (BIDMAS) to accurately solve complex calculations. In addition, they’ve strengthened their ability to analyse data and represent it visually in bar graphs, line graphs and pie charts. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they apply these mathematical concepts to real-world problems and investigations.

Inquiry

During Inquiry in Semester 1, students explored the difference between needs and wants while identifying influences on consumer choices. They have considered strategies that can be used to help make informed personal consumer and financial choices. Students have been working hard to organise their market stalls. They will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained when they host their own market still on Thursday the 26th of June!

Social and Emotional Learning

Students have been building upon their knowledge of how to handle conflict. Students have had rich conversations about choices they can make and how it can impact those around them. Students have been investigating the importance of using de-escalation strategies so they can remain calm and speak to others in an appropriate way. To support students in applying and using these skills they have had opportunities to role play difficult situations with their peers.
