Social support for neurodivergent students
At GEC, we are committed to supporting the needs of all students, including those who are neurodiverse and may experience social challenges. We are currently exploring additional strategies to enhance this support. At present, students benefit from a range of initiatives including the ICAN mentor group, which offers small group connection and guidance, the use of sensory tools to support regulation and focus, and ongoing staff professional development through targeted workshops. These efforts reflect our dedication to creating an inclusive and understanding environment where every student can thrive both socially and academically.
Here are some resources families can access at home that may help support their child’s social engagement.
ICAN
I CAN® - Australia's Largest Autistic-led Organisation
ICAN has helped thousands of Autistic young people develop a stronger sense of self-acceptance, confidence, optimism and belonging
Different Journeys
Different Journeys specialises in bringing autistic teens, adults, their families and carers together to support each other in safe, supportive and affordable environments. We enable them to share the journey, connect and create positive peer support communities. We aim to create a stepped care approach that meets the needs of our community where they are at.
The Push up Challenge at GEC on Monday 23rd June
The challenge encouraged students to support each other to do as many push ups as they can. Headspace ran the challenge and is a key beneficiary of the fundraising efforts. Through movement they are working to raise awareness for mental health and honour the 3,214 lives lost to suicide in 2023. Funds raised for headspace Elsternwick will help bring their youth-led community garden to life.
