In our classrooms in Week 5 and Week 6

In Reading, our students will continue with our whole class novel, Boy Overboard. Through the reading on this text, we will explore interesting vocabulary, sentence level structures and comprehension questions. The text also explores some complex ideas and social themes about displaced people and what it means to be a refugee.

In Writing, students are enjoying the text 'The Wild Robot', and it great to see how they are emulating the styles and language used in this book. Students are now well into their own Science Fiction story about their own robot. Over the coming weeks, they will build the tension as they build their story to a climactic point and resolve their robot's problem. We are looking at other authors and the different ways they use language to continue to build on the main character through their experience in the narrative.

Over the comming weeks our students will also begin working on their letter writing skills. This will culminate with our Grade 5 students writing letters to apply for 2025 school leadership roles. All students will be encouraged to think about their own skills and character strengths, as well as their ability to write an application letter. We would greatly appreciate parents taking this opportunity to discuss the potential for becoming a school leader with your children. Every years we see our Grade 6 students who take on leadership

In Mathematics, students will begin to look at Fractions and Decimals. This is a topic we have already spent some time exploring this year and is always a stress point for students. if you get the opportunity, it would be great to have a conversation with your child about fractions and how they are a part of every day life.

In STEAM, our Grade 5s are building their base Robotics, which they will then code to move around a set track. Our Grade 6s have started their Digital Design unit, and are creating small name tags that will be printed using our 3D printers.

In Topic, we will are examining economics and business concepts. In the next two weeks of term, we will look at packaging on food and other products and some of their rights and responsibilities as a consumer.
