Year 6 Aquatics

On Monday the 28th of October, the year 6’s of Greenwith Primary got a chance to go to West Lakes Aquatic Centre.

Everyone had such a great time, it was surprising to all of us because many of us hadn't done aquatics before. But it was still such a great experience, and it's definitely going to be something talked about at our graduation!

For our REALLY fun activities, we did:

  • Sailing, where the wind turned over the boat sideways and we all got a turn of steering the boat and feeling the water
  • Surfing/bodyboarding, we got to swim in the sea across from the aquatics centre and attempt stand-up surfing! The bodyboarding was great! Everyone had a go at standing independently on their boards
  • In both canoeing and kayaking, we got to enjoy and work hard together, we had to keep in time so we wouldn't capsize and it was great to see everyone using teamwork!

The staff at West Lakes were amazing and fun but also taught us a lot about water safety including how to prepare when going in the water. The things they taught us could prevent us from being in bad situations, these are some of them:

W.E.T W: Weather/Wind gusts E: Equipment T: check the TIDE

PFD P: Personal F:Floatation D:Device (also known as life jackets)

Overall it was great, the weather was nice and it was windy and sunny enough to do most of the activities.

We would like to thank all of the Aquatic staff for teaching us water safety and how to do all the activities, we would like to thank the teachers for this opportunity and experience, and OF COURSE the year 6 students for participating and being respectful and kind.
