These health needs change over time as we experience significant transitions across a lifespan. What are students at St. Fidelis writing about this term?
Foundation students will be writing narratives, while students in Years 1 to 4 will focus on persuasive texts. Students in Years 5 and 6 will engage in structured debates.
What is Persuasive Writing?
Persuasive writing is a form of expression where the writer aims to convince the audience to adopt a specific viewpoint or take a particular action. This is achieved by presenting logical reasoning with supporting evidence, and compelling arguments.
Through persuasive writing, students learn to articulate a clear perspective on a topic, provide reasons to back their opinions, and effectively persuade their audience. This skill is important for students to develop critical thinking, enhance communication abilities, and foster the capacity to express themselves convincingly.
Why Teach Persuasive Writing?
As students progress in their writing skills, it’s essential to expose them to various writing formats. Persuasive writing encourages students to formulate specific reasons for their opinions and research facts that support their views. By understanding how writing can influence thoughts and actions, students also become more aware of the persuasive nature of the advertising material they may come across through television, the internet, and other media.
Importance of Persuasive Writing
Structure of Persuasive Writing:
The topic sentence serves as a straightforward declaration of the writer’s opinion. Each subsequent argument should be distinct and clearly articulated. The concluding statement ties everything together, reinforcing the writer's position.
