Grade 1 and 2 News

Term 1, Week 8

Key Dates & Reminders:

  • Friday 22nd March - Harmony Day and Ride to School Day: Tomorrow students will be organised into cross-age groups and will be participating in a rotation of activities reflecting different cultures from around the world. Students are encouraged to dress in orange to celebrate Harmony Day. It is also Ride to School Day tomorrow, students are encouraged to walk, ride ,skate or scoot to school in the name of active travel (for those who live further from school - part way is ok!). Students will be asked to place their bike or scooter on the lower oval and will need to collect it from here at the end of the school day. Please see the Specialist News section of the Newsletter for further information.
  • Monday 25th March - Cross Country: On Monday students will be participating in our school Cross Country. On this day Grade 1 and 2 students are encouraged to dress in their house colours. Students will run from a couple of different starting points (depending on their year level) and will conclude the race at the Spring Gully Soccer field - families are encouraged to attend and can find more details on the Specialist page of the newsletter.
  • Thursday 28th March - Easter Raffle and Hat Parade: Last week the youngest child in each family should have brought home with them a book of raffle tickets for our Easter raffle. The raffle will be drawn on the last day of term, following our annual Easter Hat parade. Students are encouraged to create an Easter hat, at home, to wear during the parade - we look forward to seeing everyone's creations!

We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our students over the first term of the year; have been very proud of the progress they have made and are finding it tricky to believe that the end of term 1 is so close. Please remember that school will finish at the earlier time of 2.15pm on Thursday 28th March. We wish our families a safe, healthy and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing you all for a busy and exciting term 2!

What we have been up to...

People Who Help Us!

As part of Topic lessons students created roles plays using puppets. They considered the 'Community Helper' puppets that they had available and created a short story involving the puppets in their role in the community.

A grade 1 and 2 class spent an afternoon last week investigating the gum leaves within our school yard to celebrate 'National Eucalypt Day'. They collected samples and returned to class to create water colour paintings depicting the leaves found.

Learning in Week 9

Reading, Writing and Spelling:

During Reading sessions, students will practise making connections between themselves and a text.

Students will be revising the sounds and heart words taught throughout that term, which require a little more practise following some assessment.

Week 9, will culminate in students publishing a narrative story they have been working on over the past 2 weeks. Students have been following the 'Writing Process' whilst creating these stories.

Mathematics:  Students will round out the term with various fun activities which will reinforce the number concepts taught throughout the term. They will also have the opportunity to look at the concepts of symmetry and graphing.

Topic: As part of topic lessons students will finalise a number of activities which will be collated to create a book titled 'All About Me'. The activities completed throughout the term were designed to foster a sense of belonging for students recognising they belong within their family, at school and within the wider Spring Gully and Bendigo communities.
