Careers Immersion in Science – Monash University Science Precinct Talk and Tour

Selected students of Year 11-12 who have expressed interest in exploring a science pathway for their future were given the rare opportunity to visit the brilliant science facilities and student spaces at the Monash University Science Precinct with myself and Mr. Kalfas on Wednesday 27th March. Science at Monash is home to a vibrant, dynamic, and world-renowned community at the forefront of innovation, discovery and learning in Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Mathematics, Geography and Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences. Students showed great interest in these areas and enjoyed receiving a sneak peek into campus life where they were taken on a guided Tour of the Faculty of Science and its facilities as well as attend a Presentation about Studying Science at Monash and the Career opportunities a Science Degree can lead to. This opportunity provided our budding scientists with a true immersive experience into courses and careers in science. Many thanks to Kim Aitken from the Faculty of Science for collaborating with me to provide this amazing career immersion in science for our students.

The HACCI Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Victoria) International Women’s Day Event

Celebrating International Women’s Day 2024, it was a privilege to attend and represent Oakleigh Grammar together with 5 of our Year 11 students and our Academic Leader of Mathematics Mrs. Leanne Giaimo to the HACCI IWD Event held on the evening of Wednesday 6th March.

We were inspired to see and hear from one of Australia’s leading Macroeconomists, Australia’s G20 Sherpa, in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Dr. Angelia Grant in conversation with ROBYN SARANAH. Dr Grant, a global change-maker with significant insight into women’s progress in the economic, business, and employment arena discussed many issues we face such as International relations,  that it requires hope and persistence from past, current, and future generations to create change for a better world. She also provided some valuable careers advice that when deciding on careers to pursue, to use the combination of two - using our “Heads” to learn the things we are passionate about and following our “Hearts “ what we truly care about will help us find that career path we are searching for.

Many thanks to Fotini Kypraios, and the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Victoria) for inviting us to this event, an evening enjoyed by us all.

HACCI IWD Event - student summary

On Wednesday 6 March , a group of us had the privilege of attending the HACCI International Women’s Day event, accompanied by Ms. Mascaro and Ms. Giaimo. The event featured Dr. Angelia Grant, an awe-inspiring female macroeconomist. Hearing firsthand from a woman in such a high position was truly empowering.

Dr. Grant's words of encouragement, optimism, inspiration, persistence, and empowerment deeply resonated with us, leaving us with the key takeaway that our horizons are broad in the global society, and everyone has the potential to prosper regardless of gender or race.

Moreover, she enlightened us to the reality that despite the challenges we may face, we are capable of achieving beyond our mere means. Her motivation and empowerment continue to echo in our minds, reminding us of the various career avenues we can pursue and excel in.

At the event's conclusion, we had the opportunity to take a photograph with Dr. Grant, who reinforced our potential and the power of our voices in the workforce. Ultimately, the HACCI International Women’s Day event was an enriching experience, providing us with insights into our futures and ways to overcome challenges in the workforce to achieve promotion and maximise our potential.

We would like to thank Mrs. Mascaro and Mrs. Giaimo for taking us to this inspiring event.

OG Senior School Tertiary Careers and Employment Expo

It was exciting to re-introduce the OG TERTIARY CAREERS AND EMPLOYMENT EXPO back onsite for our Senior Students.  This one stop shop held in the conference centre comprised of a record 30 exhibitors in attendance from Victorian and Interstate Universities, TAFE and Private Institutions, together with Employers and even The Defence Forces!

Representatives from these organisations were available to provide our students with course and career advice about their tertiary and career offerings.  Students were also given the most up to date career and course handbooks to assist them with course, careers and pathways research. It was also wonderful to see parents of senior students who came to the expo embracing this opportunity.

One of our employers in attendance, McDonalds who currently have job vacancies, gave students seeking a casual job the opportunity for on-the-Spot Job Interviews! It was pleasing that students took up this rare opportunity of an interview exclusively at Oakleigh Grammar with some leaving the expo securing a casual job!

The expo provided students with many opportunities to discover course, careers and pathways available to them and the importance of VCE studies and selecting studies students enjoy and are good at to reach these pathways.

Many thanks to our students, parents, staff, and exhibitors, who participated and supported our Careers Expo.
