Year 2 Literacy
Developing Word Choice
This term in Year 2, students have been learning about word choice and selecting words carefully to create fluent sentences that create a vivid image in the reader’s mind. In our reading sessions, students have been identifying effective word choice strategies in a variety of texts, including the use of interesting words and figurative language such as similes, metaphors and personification.
In our writing sessions, students have been exploring the genre of ‘recount’. They have practised using the correct structure of a recount text, with a title, orientation, series of events and a reflection. Additionally, students have been using the word choice strategies examined in reading to extend their own recount writing. It has been fantastic to see students come up with creative ways to describe their experiences using figurative language!
Personification:
‘The paper screamed as it was being cut’ - Zaaei 2Y
Similes and Metaphors:
‘You are as slow as a sloth’ - Ivy 2L
‘You sing as beautiful as a bird’ - Andrea 2Y
‘They are as quiet as a ninja’ - Stephen 2L
