Empowering Students: Metro Train Education Session

Empowering Students: Metro Train Education Session

Last Wednesday, Year 4, 5 and 6 students were treated to an enlightening session led by a representative from Metro Trains. This invaluable opportunity not only broadened their understanding of public transport but also equipped them with essential knowledge and skills for safe and responsible commuting.

Throughout the session, students delved into various facets of Metro Train travel, including the operation of Myki cards, the importance of adhering to laws and etiquette on trains, and the significance of prioritising safety at all times. Here's a glimpse of what they learned:

Myki Card Operation: Students gained insight into the mechanics of Myki cards, learning how to top them up and effectively tap on and off to facilitate seamless travel experiences.

Understanding Train Laws: Discussion centred around the rationale behind train laws, emphasising their role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all commuters. Students explored the potential consequences of disregarding these laws, highlighting the importance of compliance.

Etiquette Awareness: Identifying and interpreting signs that communicate appropriate behaviour on trains became a focal point. Students discovered the importance of being considerate to fellow travellers and familiarised themselves with priority seating protocols, including those for passengers with hidden disabilities symbolised by the sunflower logo.

Accessibility: Practical guidance on accessing trains with bicycles or wheelchairs was provided, promoting inclusivity and accessibility within public transport infrastructure.

Safety Measures: Students were astonished to learn about the impressive speed of trains (up to 115 km/h) and the considerable distance required for them to come to a halt (up to 14 football fields). Insights from athlete Vanessa Low underscored the importance of vigilance and awareness around train stations and tracks, reinforcing the message of safety first.

Crossing Options: Understanding safe crossing options, such as overpasses, underpasses, and level crossings, was emphasised to instil good habits and prevent accidents.

Seeking Assistance: Students were acquainted with the various personnel they can seek help from, including station staff, authorised officers, protective services officers and police officers. The role of emergency buttons located on trains and at stations was also explained, empowering students to act swiftly in cases of emergencies.

Thank you to Metro Trains for providing the session.
