Simpson Barracks Expo - 5th May

The Defence Work Experience Program has advised that the Army Simpson Barracks Expo is open for registrations. This event has been developed to showcase the variety of careers with Army and Defence. Tickets are limited for this free event.

There will be courtesy shuttle buses from Watsonia Train Station to Simpson Barracks throughout the day for students with their parents. Timetable is attached below. Gates will open at 10:00am and close 4:00pm. Photo ID is required on the day for Entry. (School ID is acceptable for U18)

AIE | Open Day - 25th May

RMIT Science Experience Program - 2nd-4th July (year 9 & 10 students)

RMIT are pleased to offer students the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Science Experience Program at RMIT University during the school holidays, from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 July 2024.

The Science Experience Program is three fun days of science and technology activities for students in Year 9 or 10. There are a number of funded places available to award to students with a keen interest in STEM (the registration fee is normally $210). There are also a limited number of sponsored accommodation places for rural and regional based and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and one guardian travelling to Melbourne in order to participate. Students applying for sponsored accommodation will be asked to write a short statement outlining their circumstances as part of the application process.

As part of the program, students will work together to problem solve real world challenges in laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities in disciplines such as space science, AI, computer science, chemistry, health science, sensory science and engineering. Interactive activities and guest lectures will provide participating students with an invaluable opportunity to learn from academic experts, and friendly RMIT student mentors will be their guides throughout the program. The Science Experience Program gives students the opportunity to explore career paths in STEM, meet like-minded new friends and see what university is all about in an engaging and exciting environment.

University of Sydney | Tahgara Program - 15th - 19th July

The Tahgara Program is an intensive week-long residential program at the University of Sydney, designed to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Year 12 students for their final exams and equip them for their journey into higher education.

Students attend workshops presented by exam markers, expert tutors, faculty academics, and university staff and students. Designed to build educational capacity and motivation, students participating in the Tahgara Program will experience an individually tailored program, guiding them through scholarship applications, university pathways, exam preparation, as well as receiving one-on-one subject specific tutoring.

There is no cost for the schools or families of students who participate in the Tahgara Program. The University of Sydney will pay for travel, meals, accommodation and all other expenses associated with the program.

A free, nationwide science competition for primary and secondary school students in Years 3 to 10, Think Science! encourages students to perform an investigation using the Science Inquiry skills from the Australian Curriculum and document their process and findings in a video. SWL is available to students doing a VET Course in their VCE/VM Pathway.

Monash Biomedical Research - Work Experience (15+)

Secondary school students are taken into our laboratories for a week-long placement to experience what the life of a research scientist is really like. These placements enable secondary students (15 years of age or older) to gain an insight into careers in biomedical research by allowing them to observe and participate (subject to safety considerations) in the activities of a research laboratory. The Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute is a research-intensive institute, and our scientists focus on fundamental research questions surrounding health and disease. Consequently, students who can show a passion for science and future careers in research will be viewed favourably.

Parliament of Victoria - Work Experience (15+)

Expressions of interest to complete a work experience placement at the Parliament of Victoria in terms 3 and 4, 2024 are now open. Students can choose between two programs, Sitting or Services.

Parliamentary Sitting placements provide the opportunity to see the law-making process up close. Students will go behind the scenes with the staff who directly support Parliament sittings, to get a deeper understanding of our democratic processes.

Parliamentary Services placements offer a variety of opportunities that can be matched with a broad range of student interests and career goals, including business operations, facilities management and maintenance, broadcast (Hansard), and hospitality (kitchen).

Placements run for 5 days: Monday-Friday, from 9am until 5pm each day.

Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) - Work Experience (year 10-12 students, 15+)

The AIE Work Experience Program is a great way for secondary school students in years 10 to 12 to learn about the interactive entertainment and digital industries. The week will open the door to the range of career possibilities in the industry and allow students to get hands-on with the tools of the trade.

The Work Experience Program runs from 10am to 4pm over the course of a week and encompasses a range of activities including 3D animation, programming, designing and much more.

This Program is designed for year 10 students who are interested in science, giving them an opportunity to experience laboratory science in a hands-on environment.

Program Focus – A weeklong work experience program offered to high achieving year 10 students who are passionate about science, preferable in molecular biology/cell science. Students will experience laboratory science in a hands-on and demonstrative environment. The program will include participation in micro-molecular techniques, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, chemistry practicals, tracking and mapping using GPS/GIS, ecological survey techniques and more.

Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) (Cyber Security and Robotics) – Work Experience (year 11 & 12 students)

The ASD work experience program is for Year 11–12 students at the Australian Cyber Security Centre. The program focuses on students who are considering further studies in a STEM-related field.

The week-long program offers you an opportunity to extend your knowledge and skills through practical challenges.

Students who enjoy discovering how technology works are considered favourably over those who use technology.

All placements are in Canberra. Students from interstate are encouraged to apply. Interstate students will receive assistance with travel (transportation) costs. Interstate students are responsible for their own accommodation.
