Learning

As we come to the end of the year, I’m excited to share a wonderful milestone in our Balambalam journey. On Tuesday the 9th of December, our staff came together for a full Staff Induction Day.
It was an energising and purposeful day. Our teachers spent time forming connections with each other and gaining some insight into how our lessons will be structured. Most importantly, we worked together to build a shared understanding of what learning at Balambalam will look, feel and sound like for your children.
Butterfly Beginnings is start-up program that will run at the beginning of the school year. While learning will absolutely be happening, the first priority is helping children feel safe, confident and connected. The program focuses on:
- building strong relationships between students and teachers
- establishing clear routines and expectations
- teaching children how learning happens at Balambalam
supporting children to develop independence, confidence and a love of learning.
Just like a butterfly needs time and care to grow, we believe children thrive when they are given strong foundations. A calm and consistent start helps children settle more quickly and sets them up for success across the whole year.
As we head into the holiday break, there’s no expectation for formal schoolwork. However, learning doesn’t stop when school does, it simply looks different! Simple, everyday experiences can be incredibly powerful. Some ideas families might enjoy include:
- reading together and talking about favourite characters or new words
- cooking and measuring ingredients
- playing board games that involve turn-taking, counting or problem-solving
talking about signs, maps or directions when out and about.
Over the holidays, my own family loves spending time visiting the beach, cooking together and exploring new places. Even something as simple as planning a day out can become learning, talking about time, distances, choices and experiences. These shared moments build language, curiosity and connection, which are just as important as any classroom learning experience.
Thank you for being part of our growing Balambalam community. We can’t wait to welcome students next year and begin this exciting learning journey together.
Wishing you and your families a relaxing and happy holidays,
Daniel Wragg
