Stepping Into Learning: A Warm Welcome to Our Students
I was sitting in a fantastic maths class last week when I overheard Junior say, “I can't believe how hard I'm working.” Moments like this bring a smile to a teacher's face and are a fantastic reminder of the energy, focus, and enthusiasm our students bring to learning at MITS.
It’s always so exciting to welcome our new Year 7 MITS mob each year — it never ceases to amaze me how quickly they make connections and begin contributing their ideas and energy to the school community. We also extend a warm welcome to our new Year 8 students, who are already settling in and bringing their own perspectives and enthusiasm. It’s also wonderful to see the family connections across the year levels, with so many students supporting each other and sharing their experiences.
The first weeks of term have been full of lots of testing, helping us plan for targeted learning that meets each student where they are. Even amidst assessments, it’s been inspiring to see students bravely speaking in front of their peers about their leadership qualities — a clear demonstration of Courage, one of our core MITS values, and a sign of the confidence and growth happening already.
Alongside our school captains, I’m thrilled to announce our Student Representative Council leaders: Neveah and Mookie (Year 7), and Denzel and Armani (Year 8). They will work closely with the captains to strengthen the student voice at MITS.
It was also wonderful last week to have students share their reflections on the first few weeks with their families — hearing their perspectives reinforces the importance of our supportive learning environment. A key part of this is our focus on tutor groups in the morning, where students reflect on their learning, set goals, and share experiences with one another.
Our Year 7 students will head to Camp Manyung in Mt Eliza this week, while our Year 8s are off to Phillip Island. These experiences are fantastic opportunities for students to strengthen peer connections, try new challenges, and create memories that extend beyond the classroom.
It’s shaping up to be an incredible year at MITS, and like Junior, I look forward to sharing more examples of the wonderful learning and hard work happening in the classroom.
