Santa Teresa Immersion 2025

Our journey began before sunrise, as we gathered at school and boarded our flight to Alice Springs. The warm desert air welcomed us as we explored the breathtaking landscapes of Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap, pausing to reflect on the sacred beauty and spiritual depth of the region.

In Alice Springs, we visited the School of the Air, Telegraph Station, and Royal Flying Doctor Service, gaining insight into life in remote Australia. We also experienced the vibrant local culture at Rex’s Reptile Centre and ended the day with Mass at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, where the community’s warmth set the tone for our immersion.

AtSanta Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte), we were deeply moved by the generosity and faith of the Arrernte people. We joined Mass sung in the local language, cleaned the church, and helped at community sites including the school, aged care centre, and spirituality centre. Each group’s work, whether preparing meals, assisting in classrooms, or painting alongside local artists, was met with gratitude and friendship. Listening to Elders share stories of the Stolen Generations gave us a profound appreciation for resilience, culture, and connection.

Evenings were spent with the community at the recreation club, playing basketball and sharing meals. Highlights included a traditional bush dinner with the Williams family, where we cooked kangaroo tail and watched the sunset over the ranges.

As our immersion drew to a close, we returned to the cross at dawn, reflecting on the lessons of humility, gratitude, and shared humanity. What began as a journey to serve became one of transformation. Santa Teresa touched each of our hearts, reminding us that true connection comes from service, respect, and walking alongside others in faith and friendship.
