Performing Arts News

What's happening in the Performing Arts room?

In Prep we are continuing to explore how we can create music using instruments and the sounds they make. Last week students created their own rhythms using the claves/rhythm sticks. This week we began learning about maracas, the sounds they make and how we can create rhythms with them that match the songs we are listening to.

In Grades One and Two we are continuing to explore how to use instruments to create rhythms. Last week, students used claves/rhythm sticks and maracas to create their own rhythms in small groups. This week, students explored the sounds that a range of percussion instruments make and then used them to create their own rhythms in small groups. These performances were recorded for their portfolios.

In Grades Three and Four we were hard at work rehearsing our xylophones and glockenspiels for our ensemble performances. This week we performed for our classmates, and these performances were filmed for our portfolios.

In Grades Five and Six this week we began working on our portfolio task. This task asks students to think about how music can be used to enhance storytelling. We watched some examples as class as to what this can look and sound like. In small groups, students then selected a picture story book and read through it to begin identifying where music could be added to add to the storytelling experience.
