This month, our students have been exploring a variety of exciting topics in Mandarin. However, the highlight of our cultural learning was the Mid-Autumn Festival — one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture.
The Mid-Autumn Festival
🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙
The Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Zhōngqiū Jié (中秋节) in Chinese, is also called the Moon Festival. It is a traditional harvest festival and a time for family reunions. The festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, when the moon is full — usually falling between mid-September and early October. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on October 6th.
The festival is also widely observed in many other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines — each with their own unique traditions but sharing the same festival date as China.
It is a joyful occasion marked by family gatherings, delicious mooncakes, colourful parades and glowing lanterns.
Across all year levels, students listened to the story of the Moon Festival and learned about the customs and celebrations associated with it. To mark the occasion, we also made different kinds of lanterns in class — a highlight that students truly enjoyed!

If you would like to extend the celebration at home, here’s a simple and fun mooncake-making activity you can try with your children. 🥮
