In The 'Classroom'

What have we been learning about in Physical Education?

During the first two weeks of the year students in all year levels were participating in activities that developed their striking and fielding skills through various activities and games. The Foundation and Year One students developed their two handed striking techniques using cricket and baseball bats through a variety of skills challenges and worked in teams on fielding techniques through games such as 'Chuck the Chicken'. The Year Two and Three students used their knowledge of two handed strikes, fielding techniques and teamwork when playing whole class games including 'Chuck the Chicken' and 'Whacky Baseball'. The Year Four to Six students all tried their hand at 'Danish Longball', a modified version of baseball/softball, and it was impressive to see each class use their prior knowledge of striking and fielding strategies to help their team score runs within the new game rules.

During weeks 3 and 4 all students headed into the health classroom to complete a short unit on Health Messages in our Community. The Foundation students identified safety messages that they see or hear in everyday environments that may contain dangers like their home, around water or on the road.  They established safe actions that could be taken to avoid harm in a variety of situations. The Year One to Year Four students explored various health messages that they encounter at school, in the community or digitally; they developed strategies to understand the health information and decided what actions they might take to improve their health as a result of the messages. The Year Five and Six students explored the trustworthiness of a variety of sources where they receive health messages such as doctors, government advice, peers and family and online spaces. They thought critically about which health claims they should believe and made decisions about their health based on their own evidence based research.

Basketball

During Term One both of our Boys and Girls basketball teams won the Seaside District Inter-School sport seasons. Both teams have had a very long wait to have the chance to represent the district at their respective Division tournaments this term. The girls opportunity came up first on Tuesday the 14th of October. The team represented the school and our district very well on the day against some quality opposition, coming away as 3rd place finishers after the pool stage. The following day on the 15th (a special day for Mr Muller) the boys went one step further, making it through to the Grand Final after a successful group stage. The skills were high and the competition, Aspendale Gardens, very skilful. With two minutes to go on the clock an excellent tactical timeout was called by Mr Muller with BRPS down by 9 points. After some words of inspiration from the coach the boys refused to give up! They came out firing and threw down multiple 3 pointers to clinch victory by 1 point in the dying seconds. An amazing win which allows the boys to continue their journey to the regional finals. Upon returning to school, Mr Muller could be heard to announce that he "couldn't have wished for a better birthday present".
